STATE PROTECTED MONUMENTS OF UJJAIN

Tilkeshwar Mahadev Temple

This temple was built in 18th century by Shri Sadashiv Jagannath Bhave. It is surrounded by a huge wall. It has ardhmandap, mahamandap, antaral and garbh-griha. The roof of the ardhmandap has wall paintings of Maratha period. To the south west of the temple there exists a step-well made of plain black brown stones.

 

 
   
Vishnu Chatushtik

This is a Chatushtika idol of Vishnu in sitting position occupying the middle of the rectangular hall. Sculpted as per the injunctions of shastra this four-faced idol of Vishnu belongs to 9 th century. According to Vishnu Dharmottar, the four faces of Vishnu represent Vasudeva, Balram , Pradyumna and Aniruddha.

 

   

Chaubis Khambha

The Chaubis Khambha monument was once a two- storyed entrance to the Mahakal temple. The remains of the city wall exist near the gate. The gate is flanked by idols of Mahamaya and Mahalaya whose names are carved on the plinth. The entrance has 24 pillars that is why it is called Chaubis Khambha. The gateway was built in 10th - 11th century A.D. in Parmar style.

   

Chhatri of Veer Durgaddas

Veer Durgadas died in Samvat 1775 and was cremated on the bank of holy Kshipra river. A Chhatri was built in 18th century in his memory. This is a fine example of later medieval Rajput art. Built of red sandstone the Chhatri is decorated with beautiful carvings of foliage, figures of humans , animals and deities and fascinating scenes.

Kalka Mata Temple, Jalwa

 

This temple was built in popular Bhumij style of Malwa. At present the middle part of the temple's garbha-griha remains and the rest of portion is gone. In the vertical plan only middle part remains. In the ground plan only garbha-griha survives in its original shape. the sabhamandap was in ruins and has since been renovated. Originally the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and not to goddess Kalaka. There is a Shivalinga in the garbha-griha.

 

     

Chamunda Temple, Gazanikheda (Runjia)

This east-facing temple is in a good shape. This temple was built in 11th century in Bhumij style and its garbha-griha, antaral and mandapa are worth mentioning. The Chamunda idol in the garbha-griha is worshipped . On the garbha-griha of the ancient ruined temple, brick walls have been built and plastered. The mandap is supported by sixteen pillars, which are decorated. There are inscriptions on three pillars of the mandap. A Nagari inscription of five lines is engraved on the exterior wall of the temple, which belongs to 11th century.
