The gallery houses ornate art objects bought by the Nawabs of Bhopal as well as some pieces of the Scindhias. The collection also includes exquisitely done works of art received by them. Even the items of routine use also show their sense of aesthetic and refined taste. The Nawabs of Bhopal had a history of over 250 years, who during their reign, fostered a new culture. Bhopal is famous for its etiquette and sophisticated mannerism. During the first quarter of 20' century (1901-1926) Begum Sultan Jahan was the ruler of Bhopal State. She had a passionate interest in art and education. Due to her efforts the king Edward Museum was established.
The collection of rare objects for the museum however had started during the rule of her mother Shah jahan Begum (1888-1901), who acquired them from remote corners of the world. The assortment include artistic
creations from China, Tibet, Japan, Europe, besides all the regions of India. |
Some of the important exhibits in the gallery include enameled vase, hookah (hubble-bubble), Collyrium phials, ornamented flower vase of ceramic., flower stands, birds and animals in silver and metals, dragon made of ivory. Other important objects exhibited are the inkpot, paper cutters, ornamented stick in ivory, cylindrical box, silver foil coated, hookah silver flower pot, saucer with depicting dragon, phial of perfume in the shape of a peacock, service tray. Some of the objegts with royal touch are jewellery box, gold polished silver cups and miniature tombs. Besides, the metal Padmpani Avaloketerwar carpet seller, mirror with high degree ot workman, vase teapot of agate, onyx cup etc. show the refined tastes of the ruler of Bhopal.
Objects of metal, ceramic and wood also show good quality workmanship. These include saucers, boxes, flowerpots, toys and jewellery of gold and silver toys of shell and metals. Besides a wash basin of the Scindhias and lamps are exquisite artifacts of the gallery .
