Fossils

The fossils of Mandla district were first discovered in 1970 by Or. S.R. Ingle of Jabalpur Science College, Dr. M.B. Shinde of Birbal Sahani Palaeobotanical Research Institute, Lucknow at Parapani and Samanapur. For next seven years nobody took any interest in this area. Later, in 1978, the District Archaeological Society reported a large number of fossil remains from Ghugava and Silthar. Here, the trunks and some other objects including the tusk of elephants recovered from Narmada river are mainly exhibited.

The gallery showcases stone tools used in Lower Palaeolithic, Middle Palaeolithic and Upper Palaeolithic and in Mesolithic and Neolithic periods. Important among these are Hand Axes, Cleaver, scrappers, blades etc.
