STATE PROTECTED MONUMENTS OF SAGAR

Fort of Sanodha
   

The fort of Sanodha , a state protected monument ,was built by Maratha rulers around 18th century from strategic point of view. The two-storeyed fort has a spacious courtyard in the middle of the palace. There are four defence bastions on all four sides of the fort. The fort has permanent drinking water supply system. The fort was used by the revolutionaries in 1857 for storing military provisions.

   
Harsiddhi Devi Mandir , Rangiri
   
A state protected monument, the Harsiddhi Devi temple was built around 18th century A.D. The architecture of this temple is influenced by later Medieval Indo-Mughal style. The temple built of stone has a pilaster of lime. The garbha-griha is square and a grand idol of goddess Harsiddhi occupies the middle of it. This is considered to be one of the Jagrit Peeths of Devi. The main entrance gates of the temple are to the south and west. The top portion of the temple has a spherical dome with a courtyard around it.
   
Surya Mandir , Rahali
   
The Surya Mandir, a state protected monument , might have been built around 10th century, going by the iconography. Subsequently, after the temple was ruined it was reconstructed by later Maratha Sardars in 18th century. The temple is situated on the bank of Sunar river. A huge and grand idol of Surya is installed in the gabha-griha of the temple. the temple is east-facing and its entrance gates and exterior wlls are decorated with idols of deities of Hindu pantheon like Vishnu ,Shiva , Navagraha and others.
   
Madh Piparia
   
A state protected monument, the Shiva temple was built in 11-12th century. The temple is situated on a high platform. Only four pillars and Shahatir placed on them have survived. Shivalingas and other idols and architecture blocks are lying near the temple. A number of grand temples were built in a radius of about 2 kilometer in ancient times, but they are now in a state of ruins and only their memory lives on. The remaining parts of the temple are placed in Khermata , Harsiddhi Mata , Jhiria and Shiva temples. In earlier age this might have been an important cultural and religious centre of Kalchuri rulers.
   
Digambar Jain Mandir, Patanakankari
   
Built in 16th century the group of Jain temples is a state protected monument. The group of temples is surrounded by a parapet on all four sides. The temple is built on a high platform. The top portion of the temple is dome shaped and some shikars are in Nagar style. The temple is a blend of Hindu and Mughal architectures. Wall paintings are available in two of these temples. The themes of these paintings are borrowed from Jain scriptures. The style of these paintings can be called Bundelkhandi.
