INDRAGARH (1958-1959)
Indragarh (240 27' N, 75° 45' E) is an ancient site about 5 Ian
to the north-west of Bhanpura (Distt. Mandsaur). H.V. Trivedi assisted
by V.S. Wakankar conducted excavation here during 1958-59 to exhume
the remains of a Siva Temple built, according to a stone inscription
found at the site, in A.D. 709 in the tiem of Rastrakuta ruler Nannapa.

The excavation revealed apart the partial plan of the temple stone
images and architectual parts of the temple. Some inscriptions were
also found the site. The smaller antiquities consisted of beads, bangles
and weapons of iron. A sacriticial pit made of bricks and containing
ashes and charred grains was also located nearby.
A small trench, 3 furlongs to the north-west of the temple resulted
in the discovery of fluted cores, flanks and blades of Jasper, agate,
chalcedony etc. associated with pottery. At some stage, the locality
had a head-making factory.
Another trench a fnrlong to the east of the temple site was excavated
down to a depth of 17 feet. It revealed parts of structures belonging
to 8th - 12th centuries A.D. Two badly preserved human skeletons together
with iron objects were found in the vicinity of the temple.
