The State Museum of Madhya Pradesh was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh in its new building on November 2, 2005. Situated on the picturesque Shyamla Hills the building is indeed, an architectural marvel. It houses the best of art and culture of the heartland State of the country.
The museum has 16 different galleries categorized theme wise.
The galleries showcase pre-historic articles and fossils, excavated objects, sculptures, epigraphs manuscripts, paintings, royal collection, textiles, documents, articles associated with the freedom struggle, postal stamps, autographs, miniature paintings, coins, arms and weapons etc.

District Archaeological Museum Vidisha |

Established in 1964, this museum chronologically displays artifacts
of the entire Vidisha region. In all, 705 images, 690 coins, and
248 other artifacts have been displayed in its two galleries.
The 4th cent. A.D. Jain images from Durjanpura are important historically
too, on account of the inscriptions in Gupta Brahmi script on their
pedestals. Wherein it is mentioned that they were built during the
reign of emperor Ramagupta.
The images of Yaksha-Yakshi dating back to 2nd cent. B.C. as also
the 9th 10th cent. A.D. images of Kamdev, Sun God and Sheshshayi
Vishnu are sculptural marvels. |

Established in 1975-1976 A.D. this modest museum is still in its
initial stages of development. Sculptures take the lions share of
the exhibits though coins and photographs too are displayed.
Jain, Hindu (Vaishnava, Shaiva, Shakta and some minor pantheons)
sculptures, mostly belonging to the Parmaras of Malwa 10th-13th
cent. A.D. is displayed here. A hall (gallery) houses almost all
the sculptures. However, some are displayed in the garden and on
the sides of the museum. The important once are - Bhairav, Saptamatrikas,
Vishnu, Harihara, Dancing Ganesha, Mahishasurmardini and Jain Tirthankaras
dating between 10th to 13th cent. A.D. A panel of sculptures, which
was a part of the doorjamb of temple, greets you at the entrance.
Most of these sculptures have been gathered from sites at Kalipeeth,
Sarangpur, Andelheda, Kurawar, Karanvas, Machalpur, Parsulia, Girodhat
Sanka, Pachor, Parolia and Bisonia. On each sides of the entrance
is displayed an ancient cannon brought here from the central museum
Indore. |

Established in 1983, this museum houses 213 antiquities including
138 sculptures, 2 elephant tusk, jaw fossils and 73 other artifacts.
Vishnu
There are three galleries namely - The Shaiva gallery, the Vaishnava
gallery and the Jain gallery. Most of the sculptures date between
10th -15th Cent. A.D. The highlights of the Shaiva gallery are Shiva
from Sohagpur and Kartikeya from Hoshangabad. The prominent idols
at Vaishnava gallery are Keshav (Vishnu) and Lakshminarayana. The
sculpture of Parshvanath and the Tirthankaras are the major attractions
of the Jain gallery, the sculptures of minor pantheons include that
of Agni, Surya, Navagraha and others.
The elephant tusk and jaw fossils broken in 11 pieces and estimated
to be over 2,00,000 years old are displayed.
