STATE PROTECTED MONUMENTS OF GWALIOR

Jehangir Mahal and Shahajahan Mahal
   
This palace is opposite the Karna Mahal. Jehangir Mahal and Shahajahan Mahal share a mmon premises. According to Heeraman Munshi this was called Sher Mandir which was built by Shershah. Later, Jehangir renovated it after which it came to be called as Jehangir Mahal.
This palace was built by Shahjahan to the north-earth in front of Jehangir Mahal. the palace measures 320'x170'.Built in Mughal style the palace is a must-see monument for its art and style.
   
Moti Mahal
   
Moti Mahal is a massive building situated by the museum near Chhatri of Rani Laxami Bai. At present it houses the office of the Commissioner.
Moti Mahal was built by Srimant Maharaja Jiwaji Rao Scindia in 1827 A.D. The auditorium that was assembly hall of Madhya Bharat during the regime of Scindia State and the meeting hall are under the care of the Archaeology Department. The wall paintings in the Ragmala Hall are fascinating. The depiction of Dussehra festival celebrated by the Scindia royal family is the most beautiful painting in this hall The wall paintings depicting Radha-Krishna are very beautiful.
   
Jauhar Kund
   
Apart from palaces and temples, many tanks were constructed in Gwalior fort so as to maintain water supply in the event of a siege to the fort. Suraj Kund , Mansarovar Tal , Gangola Tal , Ek Khambha Tal , Katora Tal , Rani Tal , Chedi Tal and Jauhar Kund are some important tanks. Rajput women committed Jauhar in the tank in the wake of the attactk of Iltumash due to which it came to be called as Jauhar Kund.
   
Tomb of Shershah Suri's Commander
   
The tomb of Shershah Suri's commander Munawwar Khan in Shyopur district is an important monument of archaeological importance. Built in 1554 the tomb is a fine example of stone craft. the construction of this tomb was completed at the time of Shershah Suri's son Islam Shah.
   
Karna Mahal
   
The Tomar Rajputs occupied the Gwalior fort in 1194 and ruled till 1576 A.D. the rulers included Veeramdev, Uddharan dev, Veramdev , Ganpatidev, Dugarendra Singh and Kirthi Singh. The Karna Mahal was built by them between 1480 and 1486 A.D. This palace is built in pure Hindu style. This is a long two-storeyed building measuring 200'x200'. The palace had complete bathing arrangement for women which is called Hammam situated at the ground floor of the palace. A flight of steps leads to the second floor and roof. There is a large assembly hall inside the palace.
   
Vikram Temple or Palace
   
The celebrated king of Tomar dynasty Man Singh was succeeded by his son Vikramaditya who ruled Gwalior from 1516 to 1523 A.D. He built this palace situated opposite the Karna Mahal and behind the Man Mandir. The structure of the palace resembles that of a temple so it is popularly known as Vikram Mandir. The length of the palace is 212 feet. There is an open verandah inside the palace having a baradari. The king held his court here. there is a flight of steps to reach the upper story.
   
Gujari Mahal
   
The Gujari Mahal is a historical building built by celebrated Tomar ruler Man Singh in 1486-1516 for his beloved queen Mrignayani. This rectangular palace measures 71 M x 60 M. There is a courtyard surrounded by 28 rectangular rooms. Domical cenotaphs are built on all four corners. The Chhajja supported by decorated colour tiles and carvings add to its beauty. Entire palace is decorated with colour tiles and at places one sees very artistic and fascinating engravings on stones. The museum was housed in this building in 1920 A.D. The galleries of the museum display the glorious past and cultural traditions of the state as well as archeological heritage of the period from B.C. to 17th A.D. The exhibits include stone idols , bronze idols , inscriptions, miniature paintings, terracotta figures, coins and arms and armouries.
   
Surya Temple, Bharoli
   
Bharoli village is situated about 18 km away from Bhind in Mehgaon tahasil of Bhind district. The Surya temple in this village was built in 9-10th century by Pratihar rulers. Originally the east-facing temple was built of bricks. After the temple was ruined it was renovated subsequently. The garbha-griha is a new construction. A huge headless idol of Surya occupies the garbha-griha. the idol is of Pratihar style. The roof of the garbha-griha is flat and figures of river goddesses Ganga and Yamuna are carved on the door jambs. Mutilated images are scattered around the temple.
   
Shiva Temple,Chhimaka
   
This east-facing temple is situated about 35 km away from Gwalior on Gwalior-Bhind road. The temple was built in 12th century by the Kachhapghat rulers. The temple measures 1.75x1.75 meter. The width of the door is 50 cm. However, no images are carved on its walls.
   
Stable and Palace, Shyopur
   
This monument is situated in the Shyopur fort in Shyopur district. It was built in 16th century by Raja Indra Singh. The stable is located in front of the palace of Surdasji. there exists a pillared baradari with a capacity of 16 horses. it has two large doors over which Chhatris are built.
The palace stands in front of the stable. Probably it was the residence of the high officials of the king. The palaces divided into two portions. One portion is in the shape of a large baradari and the other is a sprawling open courtyard with pillared verandahs and small cells built around it. The two-storyed palace has small rooms on both sides of the entrance gate for guards.
   
Fortress and Palace, Husainpura
   
The fortress and palace are situated at village Husainpura ( Saraichhola) in Morena district. The village is about 2 km away on the right side of Mumbai-Agara road around 15 km from Morena. The fortress and palace were built by later Mughals. Only main gate of the fortress has survived and the defence wall has been destroyed. The entrance gate to the fortress is very huge in which Lakhouri Bricks were used. The palace is small having a pillared spacious room and small rooms built on both sides. Similarly, rooms are built in the second story.
   
Chhatri of Manohardas , Shyopur
   
This square pillared Chhatri is situated in the fort of Shyopur. There is a flight of steps to the west of it. The Chhatri built by Gaund in 17-18th century has an inscription which mentions a genealogy of Gaund rulers.
   
Shiva Temple , Aradoni
   
The temple is situated at village Ardoni in Morena district. Built in 11-12th century the temple is built in Kachhapghat style. it is based on pillars with flat roof. Artifacts of high quality are carved in the temple. The temple has an open mandap carved with beautiful sculptures of which Ganesha and Nayika doing Shringar ( makeup) are very notable.
   
Surya Temple , Aiti
   
Built in 11-12th century in Kachhapghat style the temple is situated at village Aiti in Morena district. Pillared mandaps are built on all four sides. The west-facing temple has images of Ganga and Yamuna on both jambs of the gate. The lalat bimb has the Sun god carved in the middle and is flanked by idols of Uma Maheshwar . The temple also has a depiction of Sapta Matrikas. The roof of the temple is flat. The temple is an attraction for the tourists.
   
Ancient Shiva Temple, Chhimaka
   
Built in 10-11th century by Kachhapghat rulers, the temple is situated about 33 km from Gwalior on Gwalior-Bhind road. The shikhar of this east-facing temple is gone. The garbha-griha is small. The main entrance gate is beautiful. Figures of Ganga and Yamuna river goddesses are carved on both sides. The figures of Brhma ,Vishnu and Mahesha are carved on lintel.
   
Vishnu Temple, Baradeh
   
This temple is situated at Baradeh about 40 km from Gwalior in Gohad tahasil of Bhind district. it was built from 10th to 12th century by Kachhapghat rulers. Dedicated to Vishnu the east-facing temple is situated on a high platform. its roofs are flat and has a garbh-grah and an antaral with two pillars. The images of Vishnu and Brahma are carved on one side of the lalat bimb and that of Shiva on he other side. The gate pillars are carved with images of river goddesses Ganga and Yamuna. in the back portion of the temple an image of Surya seated on a chariot is carved. An image of Kartikeya is carved to the north. This grand temple is an interesting place worth visiting.
